Our Commitment to a Safe Learning Environment for All
Dear Middie Family,
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the recent changes to federal immigration enforcement policies that may impact schools. I understand this news has caused concern and uncertainty for some of our families and staff. Please know that our commitment remains steadfast: we are dedicated to maintaining a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for every student in our care.
What to know:
- The landmark 1982 Plyler v. Doe Supreme Court case established that all children have the right to a public education. Schools cannot deny a student a public education based on immigration status.
- Middletown City Schools does not collect information about the immigration status of any student or their family members.
- The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student education records and restricts the sharing of personally identifiable information (PII) without parental consent.
- FERPA prohibits schools from sharing student records with any law enforcement agencies without a judicial order.
District and building-level administrators already have plans guided by Board policies in place to protect our students and staff, while also respecting the law.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to inspire, unite, and transform every student that walks through our doors.
Sincerely,
Deborah Houser
Superintendent
Middletown City Schools
