Middletown Schools Suspends Fall Extracurricular Activities

Middletown City School District (MCSD) today announced the suspension of all fall extracurricular activities and campus activities, such as athletics and marching band, effective today until further notice. On July 20, MCSD announced a remote start to the 2020-21 school year. 

Middletown Schools is in regular communication with the City of Middletown Health Commissioner as well as the Butler County Health Commissioner and the City of Hamilton Health Commissioner. All three health departments are communicating the rising positive cases and community spread are cause for serious concern. If MCSD does not take exceptional safety measures now, then the district jeopardizes the chances of returning to school in fall 2020. 

“In this ever changing, complicated, emotional season we have been placed in, we cannot lose focus on what is most important. The focus should be on the safety of our children, educators, staff, and all the families involved as we move forward with the main objective of educating our youth. We must remain vigilant and flexible and if ever there was a time that the old adage is paramount ‘it takes an entire village’ it is now!,” said Jackie Phillips, City of Middletown Health Commissioner.

In the State of Ohio, some school districts and local schools, including MCSD, have confirmed positive cases amongst students and staff. In Middletown Schools, officials want to keep students and staff safe and healthy. While the fall extracurricular suspension will disappoint many people, MCSD knows it is the right decision to flatten the curve and keep the district on track to bring students back to the classroom. 

“If our families and friends want schools to open in the fall, we need to get serious and we need to mitigate the community spread. We need to social distance. We need to mask up. By suspending fall extracurricular activities, we are giving our students the best opportunity to get back to the classroom,” said Marlon Styles, MCSD Superintendent.

El Distrito Escolar de la Ciudad de Middletown (MCSD) anunció hoy la suspensión de todas las actividades extracurriculares de Otoño y actividades de campo, como atletismo y banda, a partir de hoy y hasta nuevo aviso.  El 20 de Julio, MCSD anunció un comienzo remoto para el año escolar 2020-21.

Las escuelas de  Middletown está en comunicación regular con la Comisionada de Salud de la Ciudad de Middletown, así como con el Comisionado de Salud del Condado de Butler y el Comisionado de Salud de la Ciudad de Hamilton.  Los tres departamentos de salud están reportando que los crecientes casos positivos y la propagación de la comunidad es motivo de grave preocupación.  Si MCSD no toma medidas de seguridad excepcionales ahora, entonces el distrito pone en peligro las posibilidades de regresar a la escuela en el Otoño del 2020.

 “En esta temporada cambiante, complicada y emocional en la que hemos estado, no podemos perder el foco en lo que es más importante.  El enfoque debe estar en la seguridad de nuestros niños, educadores, personal y todas las familias involucradas a medida que avanzamos con el objetivo principal de educar a nuestros jóvenes.  Debemos permanecer atentos y flexibles y, si alguna vez hubo un momento en que el viejo adagio es primordial: "se necesita una aldea entera", ¡es ahora! ", Dijo Jackie Phillips, Comisionada de Salud de la Ciudad de Middletown.

 En el estado de Ohio, algunos distritos escolares y escuelas locales, incluyendo MCSD, han confirmado casos positivos entre los estudiantes y el personal.  En las escuelas de Middletown, los funcionarios quieren mantener a los estudiantes y al personal seguros y saludables.  Si bien la suspensión extracurricular de Otoño decepcionará a muchas personas, MCSD sabe que es la decisión correcta para nivelar la curva y mantener al distrito en el camino adecuado para que los estudiantes vuelvan al salón de clases.

 “Si nuestras familias y amigos quieren que las escuelas abran en el Otoño, debemos tomar esto en serio y mitigar la propagación de la comunidad.  Necesitamos distanciamiento social.  Necesitamos usar las mascaras.  Al suspender las actividades extracurriculares de Otoño, les estamos dando a nuestros estudiantes la mejor oportunidad de regresar al salón de clases ”, dijo Marlon Styles, Superintendente de MCSD.
