Middletown City Schools Secures $20,000 Grant for Literacy Project
In a win for literacy education at Middletown City Schools, Cheryl Bowling, a reading tutor at Amanda Elementary, and Terri Vincent, the district’s literacy teacher leader, have successfully secured a $20,000 grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. The grant will fund, "Morphing Into Readers," a project set to elevate the district’s literacy efforts through morphology training—an approach that will provide students with a deeper understanding of language structure, essential for developing confident and proficient readers.
With the help of this grant, MCSD is able to expand on the literacy work already underway through the implementation of Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Plus, a structured literacy approach designed to meet the needs of diverse learners. The "Morphing Into Readers" initiative will provide crucial materials and resources for morphology training, equipping educators to help students make meaningful connections between word parts and their meanings. By empowering students to decode and comprehend complex words, this project will bolster their reading abilities and enhance their overall literacy skills.
The "Morphing Into Readers" project underscores the district's ongoing commitment to literacy excellence, particularly in supporting students' foundational skills. By enhancing language structure understanding, students gain confidence in their reading abilities and are better equipped for academic success.
This achievement is a proud moment for Middletown City Schools, highlighting the impact of collaborative efforts and the dedication of educators like Mrs. Bowling and Mrs. Vincent.
