District to Close on 4/8/24 for Total Solar Eclipse
On Monday, April 8, 2024, locations in Ohio, including Middletown, will witness a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1806.
Anticipating the significance of this rare occurrence, it’s expected that the local population near the eclipse's center line, which is north of Butler County, could triple or even quadruple. School districts and municipalities have been warned to expect extreme demands and stresses on local infrastructure and services, such as hotels, campsites, food, water, restaurants, utilities, law enforcement, and fire services.
After careful consideration, and per guidance from Southwest Ohio Disaster Services, Middletown City School District will use a calamity day on Monday, April 8th, 2024, and the district will be closed.
This once-in-a-lifetime experience marks a valuable learning opportunity for our students. Each student will receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses, allowing them to safely observe the historic event. The next total solar eclipse visible in Ohio will be in the year 2099.
Normal classes and district operations will then resume on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of our school community.
