A Message from the Superintendent July 21, 2021

Dear Middie Parents, Guardians, and Friends: (La versión en español está a continuación.)

It is with great sadness that I write this letter to you. One of our students died yesterday after a possible drowning incident at the Land of Illusion Water Park. Mykiara Jones was a rising freshman at Middletown High School and we mourn for her family and friends. Mykiara’s mother works in our schools, so we will be wrapping our arms around her during this extremely difficult time.

Our district has experienced a lot of loss this past year and I want you to know we are here to help you in any way we can. Our Student Services Department is working with Access Counseling to have grief counselors available to support students, staff and parents as needed. 

If you and/or child(ren) would like to speak with a counselor, please contact Access Counseling at 513-649-8008 ext 038. In addition, here are some other resources that are available to you and your child(ren): 

• Crisis Text Line: Text “HOPE” to 741-741 to text a live trained counselor

• Addressing Grief: National Association of School Psychologists (NASP

In a year full of change, fear, and the unknown, I encourage you to talk with your child(ren) about their thoughts and feelings. Provide outlets for expression such as drawing, writing, talking and any other engaging activities. Be honest. When they ask difficult questions, it’s okay to say you don’t know the answer. Reassure them of their own health and safety and make sure they know that you are emotionally available to them. 

When the time comes, we will follow the family’s wishes regarding sharing information about memorial arrangements. We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to the family, friends, and teachers of Mykiara. We pray the family finds peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Queridos padres, tutores y amigos Middie:

Es con gran tristeza que les escribo esta carta. Una de nuestras estudiantes murió ayer después de un posible incidente de ahogamiento en el parque acuático Land of Illusion. Mykiara Jones era una estudiante de primer año en Middletown High School y lloramos por su familia y amigos. La madre de Mykiara trabaja en nuestras escuelas, así que la abrazaremos durante este momento extremadamente difícil.

Nuestro distrito ha experimentado muchas pérdidas el año pasado y quiero que sepan que estamos aquí para ayudarlos en todo lo que podamos. Nuestro Departamento de Servicios Estudiantiles está trabajando con Access Counseling para tener consejeros de duelo disponibles para apoyar a los estudiantes, el personal y los padres según sea necesario.
